Arthrodesis of Ankle Joint
Arthrodesis – is a surgery for restoring the support function of extremities. It can be lost due to pathologic dislocations, wrongly fixed fractures as a complication of tuberculous arthritis, arthrosis and other diseases causing dysfunction of extremities and intense pain syndrome.
What is arthrodesis? It is the adherence of adjacent bones i.e. formation of an artificial bone ankylosis. The joint is fixed in the most suitable functional position, so that it cannot be moved. There are a lot of surgical methods and each of them considers the anatomy of the joint, its function and biomechanics.
Arthrodesis of the ankle joint is an operation of immobilizing the ankle joint. During the surgery tendon surfaces of the huckle and shin bones are removed; they are juxtaposed and fixed. After the operation, movement of the ankle is impossible and the pain goes away. Movement is possible thanks to other foot joints i.e. the motional function is not fully limited.
Arthrodesis of the talocalcaneal joint and arthrodesis of the subtalar joint are indicated for painful fractures and dislocation fractures of the heel and huckle bones, arthrosis of the talocalcaneal joint and also for orthopedic diseases (valgus and varus deformities, clubfoot). The aim of the operation is to provide adherence of the huckle and heel bones. Subtalar arthrodesis is also one of the major methods of treating the dysfunction of the posterior tibial tendon.
Arthrodesis of the ankle joint s performed in case of a serious deformation arthrosis accompanied by an intense pain, looseness and deformation of the extremity, unsteadiness of the knee joint after poliomyelitis, paralysis of hip muscles and also tuberculosis. In case of unilateral coxarthrosis with an intense pain, aseptic necrosis of the whirlbone, deforming osteoarthrosis and also pathologic dislocations an arthrodesis of the coxofemoral joint is performed. The aim of the operation is to stabilize the coxofemoral joint and decrease the pain.
